Chapter 17

After one last glance to ensure she wasn’t seen, Ellie closed the door behind her and stepped to the edge of the balcony overlooking the rose garden. This was mental. She wasn’t from this time, yet she was letting Fitzwilliam in—into her heart. Her palms settled on the rough stone of the railing as she closed her eyes and let the cool air wash over her, the scent of dried leaves and grass tickling her nose, a tremendous improvement over the odour of the ballroom. December and winter were coming fast. Would she return to her own time before then? She couldn’t remain here forever. She had a life waiting for her. What if time was passing in the future at a similar rate? If so, they’d likely already replaced her at Pemberley…

“I believe you are Miss Elizabeth Bennet.”

She whirled around to face a man who stood just outside the door. He wore a red uniform, a militia uniform. When had he approached? He’d done so without making a sound. How? “We have not been introduced. I should return inside.”

When she attempted to walk past him, he stepped sideways, blocking her path. “I have yet to make your acquaintance since your accident, though I have heard much of you from the people of Meryton. I only wanted to speak to you. I mean no harm.”

A glint in his eye and his crooked smirk made her insides twist and squirm in an uncomfortable way. Something about him was not right, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. “Then you should allow me to return to my family.”

“For someone kept home for so long, you seem to get on with Darcy well. He was dancing with you. He never dances.”

Her head hitched back. Why was he so concerned over her interaction with Fitzwilliam? “I became acquainted with the gentleman while tending to my ill sister at Netherfield. We were in company for no more than a mere portion of my stay, so I cannot claim we are close friends, by any means.”

“Yet he stood up with you twice. He would have never done so without some understanding or unless you are allowing him liberties.”

Allowing him liberties? What did that—? Ellie gasped. “Why you foul little shit!”

She tried to dart past him, but he grabbed her wrist in a painful grip. Without thought, she covered his hand with her free one and swung the arm he held around in a self-defence move she’d practiced so many times, it came as naturally as breathing. The action twisted his arm and forced him to bend at the waist to protect his shoulder as she locked his arm behind him. “What the hell?” the awful man cried as she pulled the arm further behind him and pushed, forcing him down to one knee. “That bloody well hurts!”

“You grabbed my arm without my consent. I should not have to tell you to never touch a lady without permission.”

A door opened and closed, and she looked up in time to find Fitzwilliam standing just outside, his expression turning into an enormous grin.
